Finding Food Spots Near the White House One of the most important parts of planning a trip is arguably the food.  Whether your trip is a week long and involves getting on a plane, or just a short day trip down the street, you can’t forget to plan breaks for food.  So it’s not surprising that most of my friends who live outside the city hit me up for food recommendations when they are planning to spend the day in DC.  This usually means they will be near some touristy spots when they start to get hungry. Here are some of our favorites near the White House:

The Bottom Line: The Bottom Line is a great low key spot to grab something to eat with friends.  They offer cheap eats including burgers, salads, sandwiches, and tacos.  Stop by on a weekday for happy hour specials.

Old Ebbitt Grill: As DC’s oldest saloon, Old Ebbitt Grill transports you back in time as you enjoy their delicious food.  It can be a bit pricey, so keep your budget in check by visiting for brunch or lunch.  Old Ebbitt Grill also offers a late night menu daily from 12 am to 1 am if you are looking for munchies well after normal dinner time hours. If you are an oyster fan, be sure to stop in 3 pm to 6 pm or 11 pm to 1 am for half off during oyster happy hour.

Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken: You have probably been trekking all over the city by dinner time so you have earned a trip to Astro Doughnuts on G Street.  Stop in for some delicious fried chicken and doughnuts to fuel you up after a long day of sightseeing. Astro Doughnuts pride themselves on using fresh, local ingredients, so be sure to check in with them regularly to try their seasonal doughnuts.

Union Station: Union Station is a little bit of a hike from the White House but only a short walk from the Capitol. Once you get there, you’ll have plenty of options from food and shopping, to sightseeing and people watching.  Keep a large group or picky eaters happy at the enormous food court or with quick food spots like Shake Shack and Roti.  Or be adventurous and try a local half-smoke at Bold Bite!
